The house

  • Quiet, rural area

Doumailhac is an outstanding historic manor house which is available for self catering holidays in the french countryside. The accommodation would work for a large family or group of friends holidaying together. In total there are nine bedrooms, five bathrooms and a shower room across Le Manoir and Le Gite, which are adjacent to each other. One bedroom has twin beds, four bedrooms have large double beds and four bedrooms have zip and link beds which can be 2 singles or a large double.
On the ground floor is a large modern kitchen with its original bread oven, (great for making Pizza), original flagstone floor and a kitchen table seating eighteen. The kitchen has a large range cooker and two dishwashers as well as a microwave oven, etc. In addition there is a large sitting room, comfortably furnished with a Large TV, speaker doc and a wood burning stove.
Le Manoir is available for large families or groups of friends to share, allowing everyone to spend time together, but also enough space to allow some privacy.

Doumailhac in is a small hamlet of five houses. There are a few french families, as well as an english family and german family who have a holiday home in the hamlet. Its about a kilometre from the village of La Chapelle Montbrandeix which has a fishing lake, church and restaurant.
Interesting Chateaux and a range of cultural activities are nearby with the larger centres of Limoges, Perigueux and Angouleme all within an hour’s drive. For a day out try wine tasting at the vineyards between Bergerac and Bordeaux, visit more vineyards around Cognac for brandy, explore the Dordogne Valley or even a trip to the coast of the Charente Maritime.

Chalus, where Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded is about 15 kilometres away, its now a busy market town with bank, shops, tourist office, bars and yet more restaurants. We are about 40km north of the caves at Villars and about 50 km from the interesting city of Limoges with all its attractions. A day out would be a trip to Périgueux with its medieval streets, cathedral, shops, and restaurants.

Newly opened Lascaux-cave is just over an hour’s drive and for some exciting water based adventures the new Centre-Aquatique-Limoges-Metropole looks well worth a visit.

    Un lieu magique !
En famille, avec des amis, de l'espace pour tous.
Tout est fait pour que l'on se sente bien: cuisine, grange immense pour partie de ping pong, piscine au calme et sécurisée...
Nous reviendrons, c est certain !
    Merci Helen!

We had a great time in this huge house with al our friends. We really appreciated the space outside and inside, Being able to fit all of us around the big tables in the kitchen and in the terrace was great. Very nice to have a seperate gite for our teenagers who enjoyed being autonomous. Bikes and covered play room are also very valuable. Everything was very clean and Karen who welcomed us was very nice. Every room is furnished in a very charming style. To be perfect, i would suggest a brighter light for outside because we missed it to be able to see what we had in our plates at night ;-). The couple of loirs in the attic seemed to be very activ at night and some of us got bothered by the noise but we got used to it. A robot for the swimming pool could be helpful to keep it clean during the week. Having the pool warm all time was great and much appreciated by our kids. We had a great time in Doumailhac and would recommand the Manoir to our friends.

Le Manoir is an amazing quiet place to spend your holidays with your family and/or your friends. The rooms are very nice, spaceous and comfortable. The kitchen has everything needed to cook delicious meals and the BBQ outside allows some great outdoor lunch and dinners. We discovered the restaurant 'Chez Jules' a few minutes walking, the owners are so nice and the meal is a very good value for money. We enjoyed the swimming pool, the local castles and the walks we found on the terra aventura app. The kids were super happy to walk around, feed the horses and play ping pong. Everything is there to spend great holidays! Thank you very much Helen!

    Dear Jennifer
We are so pleased that you had a wonderful holiday, its so lovely to get feedback, we work very hard to make sure the property is as it best for our guests, it was very kind of you to take the trouble to let us know, you would be very welcome anytime.

Restaurants, food & wine

There is an excellent choice of local restaurants to suit every budget – “Chez Jules”, just a walk away and “Les Feullardiers” at Marval, a short drive away and the renown “Hostellerie St Jacques”, for a gourmet’s feast, at St Saud Lacoussière, to mention a few. The nearby towns of Rochechouart and Nontron also host excellent restaurants and are enjoyable venues for a long lunch.

Activities

The private, saltwater, heated pool measures 10 x 5 meters, it is fenced and safe for children and is always a source of fun and relaxation. There are 18 sun loungers and a variety of pool inflatables to add to the frivolity.
This is an unspoilt region of rolling wooded countryside interspersed with numerous rivers and lakes, perfect for relaxing holidays. This beautiful area has been designated a Regional Park, consequently all you will usually hear is birdsong, yet you are only a few minutes’ walk from a restaurant/bar. At night the Milky Way and a myriad of stars are often visible due to the minimal light pollution, making it an ideal venue for star gazing.
There is a large barn with table tennis and badmington, as well as a number of bicycles to use. We also have a large oil drum BBQ and a weber kettle BBQ.
For children, should they ever tire of the pool there is a lake at nearby St Mathieu with its beach and supervised swimming area will give hours fun. Older children can hire pedaloes or canoes. For the adults, the area is full of fascinating market towns . Brantome is a fascinating town on the River Dronne, sometimes called the “little Venice” of France – after exploring the town hire a canoe for a half day trip down the river and negotiate the “cascades” but be prepared to get wet !

Further remarks

At the bottom of the large garden is the “Circuit du Loup Garou”, a walking, cycling, riding route. Fishing and horse riding are also available locally.
We are also only 7km from Cussac with its large supermarket/ chemist and tourist information office.
