The house
The holiday home is located just outside Roquefixade, a village with 120 inhabitants. Roquefixade lies at the foot of the Pyrenees in the department of Ariège between the departments of Lot et Garonne and the Pyrenees Orientales.
Holiday home Gite Sent Martin (Sent is Occitan for Saint) is half of a more than 500 year old farmhouse.
Twenty years ago the house was a neglected grange, barn with a hayloft (see photo on the right). After the renovation there are now two houses, the holiday home and the part where we live (so we are always within "reach" for help or information).
Living room.
On the first floor there is a living room with a free view.
Bedrooms.
On the first floor a master bedroom with bed of 2 x 1.60m and a second bedroom
with 2 beds (the beds have a length of 2 meters!). The bedrooms have generous closet space.
Kitchen/dining room.
The kitchen is equipped with: a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave/hot air oven, gas hob, Senseo coffee machine and a spacious fridge with separate freezer.
Bathroom.
The bathroom, with a separate toilet, has a washbasin, shower cabin, electric heating and a towel dryer.
Terrace.
In front of the house is a terrace of +/- 20 m2 with a picnic table.
Internet access.
In the gite you can use (free) wireless internet.
Capacity.
Holiday home Gite Sent Martin has an area of 60 m2, and can accommodate groups/families of 4 persons (a fifth may be accommodated after consultation).
Heating.
The house uses for the chilly days heating on electricity.

Roquefixade is a village from the 14th century and has, as befits a real French village, a castle, well, castle, a ruin.
At the end of 1800, 600 people lived in Roquefixade, now 145. The house itself is in St. Martin, a so-called petit hameau (hamlet), about a kilometre south of Roquefixade. St. Martin consists of 7 old stone houses and a few more from a later date, scattered in the valley. The house is situated at an altitude of 636m and looks south at the Pic de St. Barthelemy with an altitude of 2340m. The land around St. Martin is used as hayfield. It is hayed once a year, some parts of it are then walked on by a shepherd with his flock of sheep. The use as unfertilised hayfield provides a beautiful colour palette in springtime with thousands of wildflowers. Within 100m of the cottage, a dozen species of orchid can easily be found. In the sky, birds such as the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and sometimes vultures can be seen regularly up to a small colony of sparrows that make their home in the ivy near the cottage.
Outdoor
The outdoor sports centre Ascou la Forge/Mountain Sports is located three quarters of an hour from the holiday home. Through the Gite you can register
for outdoor activities such as rafting, kayaking, via ferrata, caving, climbing, canyoning, etc.

Activities
Foix with jazz festivals, theatre and street theatre, Roquefixade with "Musica del Temps Passat" at the end of Aug. beginning of Sept. The activities around the transhumance in e.g. Saurat, at the end of May beginning of June (transhumance is the guiding of cattle
to the summer pastures).
For those who like to rummage on flea markets, all villages in the neighbourhood (and further) organise a "vide grenier" (literally "empty attic"). There is always a bargain to be had.
On the rocks below the castle, a number of climbing routes have been set out. Furthermore, there is a wide range of outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting, kayaking, via ferrata, caving, canyoning, etc.
If you want to see Ariège from the air, you can do so with a ULM.
There are thousands of kilometres of hiking trails in Ariège, ranging from easy to difficult. The department is crossed by several GRs (Grande Randonnees). The GR10, a "walk" that starts at the Mediterranean Sea and ends on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean. The GR107, the "Bonshommes", goes through the land of the Cathars and lets you walk from the North to Spain. From the Mediterranean Sea, the Sentier Cathare takes you via Bugarach and Montsegur to Foix. A walk with a history. Besides that, every self-respecting village/canton or region has its own walks. In the gîte we have maps and guides with walks for both the "promeneur" and the "randonneur expérimenté". We also have experience in guiding walks and can help you anyway we can.
Motorcycling. The many mountain roads, often narrow and winding, provide the motorcyclist with real pleasure rides with ever new challenges, views and a desire for even more kilometres.

Hiking
In the Pyrenees, thousands of kilometres of hiking trails have been marked, ranging in difficulty from easy to difficult. The department is crossed by several GRs (Grande Randonnees), the GR10, a "walk" that starts at the Mediterranean Sea and ends on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean and the GR107, the "Bonshommes", lets you walk from the North to Spain.
You can also do just parts of it, the "cherry on the cake" method. From the Mediterranean

Wat hebben wij een fijne tijd bij jullie gehad. Wat een gastvrijheid en de onverwachte attenties van jullie. Bart de bietensalade was heerlijk en een hele gezellige avond.
Prachtig uitzicht vanuit het huis, fijn terras en heerlijke wandelingen kunnen maken in de omgeving met onze 4 hondjes en wat is de Ariege mooi. Marianne bedankt voor de ontdekkingen.
