The house
Holiday house Le Grand Mur is a contemporary house, built of stone and wood, located on the edge of a hamlet, a very quiet place, where the air is pure and in summer the crickets sound from the acacias and cypress trees. located between small-scale vineyards and hills, the foothills of the Pyrenees. The cottage is surrounded by large garden,with fruit trees, vegetable garden, painting studio . Space and panoramic views are guaranteed.
The cottage consists of a large living room with French windows (37m2), with fully equipped kitchen, TV, shower, separate toilet, hall, dining area and a separate bedroom (22m2). The bedroom has a double bed with a good mattress. In the living room there are comfortable chairs and a single bed, which can also be used as a relax sofa.
The modern-looking rooms are high, light and cool in summer . The floor in the living space is natural stone from the nearby quarry and the bedroom has a wooden floor. There is a covered outdoor area (12m2) and an outdoor terrace with sun and shade spots. Beautiful views over the garden with fruit trees, Romanesque church and the surrounding hills.Sun bed and outdoor chairs available.There is private parking and the garden of 4000m2 is fenced.
Present: oven, microwave, dishwasher, TV, wifi, bed linen. Please bring your own bath towels.
Dogs are welcome. The gite is non-smoking.
1x per week comes the baker and 2x per week comes the butcher along on the village square.
At 2 km.distance is a good restaurant. At 11 km. supermarkets in Limoux and Couiza. On Sundays the famous organic, hippy market in Esperaza.

In Arques en Montsegur you can visit the small museum that will guide you through the history of the Cathars with its many Cathar castles . There is also a special 'angels' gallery to visit in Alet les Bains.

Heerlijk tot rust kunnen komen in deze mooie gîte!
Contact met Anja was makkelijk, ze woont gelijk naast je en was erg hulpvol en vriendelijk.
De rust en de natuur die het huisje omringd is geweldig en ik kon mezelf weer horen denken (woon zelf in drukte ;-) ).

We hebben een heel mooie vakantie beleefd daar ! Wat een prachtige omgeving om te verblijven, midden in de natuur en de rust ! Er is veel te beleven in de omgeving echt mooie uitstappen gedaan ! Het huisje had alle comfort dat we nodig hqdden en Anja kan je ook alles vragen ! Kortom een echte aanrader !

Deze gite ligt heerlijk rustig en heeft een prachtig uitzicht op het kerkje achter de tuin. We genoten van de mooie en gevarieerde wandelingen die je in de directe omgeving, en ook wat verder weg, kunt maken. Het waren warme dagen in de zomer van 2022, maar de gite blijft aangenaam koel. Anja is gastvrij en gaf ons fijne tips voor (wandel)activiteiten en eetgelegenheden. En de pruimen uit eigen tuin waren heerlijk.
Kortom, Le Grand Mur is een prima plek voor natuur- rust- en wandelliefhebbers!
Restaurants, food & wine
Languedoc has the largest wine production in France. Wine lovers have a great choice of fine wines such as Corbières, Malepère, Minervois and the Blanquette de Limoux (the first sparkling wine in the world,invented in 1531 by the monks of the Abbey of St.Hilaire and the first champagne! You can visit Limoux's wine caves and on Limoux's attractive square you will find several restaurants.
You can taste the regional dishes and local delicacies like cassoulet,magret de canard, the truffles or something sweeter, the nouga of Limoux. In summer, there are many concerts and traditional village festivals where you can enjoy a delicious French meal.
Activities
Great for the peace-seeker,hiker and cyclist. For the sporty cyclist, there are numerous challenging passes. In Puivert, gliding courses are given.
Also ideal if you want to immerse yourself in Cathar history.
Festes et St. Andre is located in the heart of the Cathar region. You can experience its rich history,mysteries and castles by visiting: Montségur, Lastours, the Quéribus, the Peyrepertuse
In the immediate vicinity you can make many beautiful, well-marked walks in the hills with vast vineyards, forests and panoramic views. The hills are up to 600 metres high. You can also climb the mountain tops (1500mtr) of the Roc Blanc, the Mont d'Olmes and the famous mountain Pech de Bugarach, resulting in fantastic views over the Aude and the Corbieres, with vultures flying around.
Many cultural activities in the small villages such as music, brocantes and art exhibitions. In Esperaza, there is a weekly lively hippy market with lots of organic produce on Sundays. Here you will also find a beautiful hat museum and a Dinosaur Museum. In Limoux (10 km from Festes), you will find the famous cave Seigneur d'Arques where the first champagne was made in 1531 , the Blanquette de Limoux and the atmospheric square full of liveliness and restaurants.
In Carcassonne, you can visit the famous old walled cite, as well as the Canal du Midi and the Saturday market. In Rennes-les Bains, you can enjoy the thermal baths and in the famous Rennes le Chateau, you can visit the little church and presbytery from the story of the DaVinci code. You can also seek out the extraordinary Mary Magdalene cave. A powerful energy spot is also the hermitage in the Gorges de Galamus and the labyrinth walk in Nebias, an experience worthwhile.
You can swim in the various lakes in the area : Lac de Montbel,Lac de Puivert and Lac d'Arques, lake near Quillan.
