The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

Beautiful 13th century stone chapelle with exposed beams. Well-renovated, authentic details, with open hearth, warm atmosphere, high ceilings. The kitchen area under the stairs is compact but well-designed, the rest of the space is generous. Large bath with bathtub and shower, large sunny upstairs bedroom looking out on courtyard , garden and the ancient stone houses in the hamlet. The king-sized bed is modular and can be separated into two beds. This space is great for music lovers, book lovers, the chapelle, like our house is full of books. Many sweet antique details. Original double oak doors with large key, there's also a conventional French inner door. All the rooms, 13th century, exposed beams, mysterious niches and placement of windows. Quiet situation, the last house in the hamlet - an ancient covered terrace and also a sunny terrace - right at your front door. Tiled floors with scatter rugs, thick stone walls make this a perfect refuge from the hot summer days, or a cosy place to read before the fire on a cold night. Covered parking for your car in the old coach house.

Surroundings

La Chapelle aux Roses is nestled in between a working farm surrounded by fields of wheat, sunflowers, garlic, melons, and local vineyards - a rolling landscape dotted by groves of large oaks. The little village of Lagarde-Fimarcon rings its church bells and we hear them across the fields. For your everyday needs, Lectoure, ancient fortified hill town, has all the necessities: banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, butchers, bakers, museums, exhibition halls, Thermale Centre Spa, and plentiful antique salons. Lectoure is 6 km from our place, in the other direction there is the picturesque village of La Romieu. La Romieu stands out, its tall stone towers from the Middle Ages are a beloved landmark. Here you will learn of the brave little girl whose cats freed the village of rats during the plague years, and you will see many tributes dedicated to our feline friends. The Collegiale cloister, towers and sanctuary are well worth visiting. There is a good Office of Tourism, an Arboretum, a grocery, a bakery and post office, and 2 cafés. We are located between the the cities of Agen and Auch. The nearest airport being 1 hr and 15 min away, Toulouse/Blagnac, the most practical way of getting around here is to fly in and rent a car there at the airport. There are also TGV train connections from Paris in Agen, which is 40 km from here, and there is car rental availability there at the train station as well.

We had the most lovely stay. This was our second time at the Chapelle, and we would recommend it to everyone. Having a pool at your disposal at all time, and in full privacy is the best way to relax. There are two lying beds at the pool, in which you can fully relax, while looking out at the field behind the pool to spot some wild animals. Also, the area has so much great activities. We especially loved the markets in Lectoure and Samatan, hiking around the chateau and having lunch at hotel Bastard. The Chapelle has everything you need and the cats are welcoming neighbours. Sally also takes good care of you, with bread, fruit and wine ready on the table when you arrive. We loved the pie she made and shared with us! If you are hesitating, please don't! this will be a stay that you will remember!

Greatly appreciate your taking the time to write this! It was a pleasure having you come again. The fact that you were so receptive to our beautiful part of the world reminded me of all the reasons why I am here, why I am doing this.
Thanks again and wishing you a good rest of the season! xxxooo Sallie

It was great having you here! I can't thank you enough for laundering and folding the towels!
    That was a grand surprise!
You will be happy to hear that the past 2 days we had very strong west winds and it seems to have been too much for the mosquitoes!
Bruno (especially!) and the cats are missing you!
Thanks again for nice review xo Sallie

Whilst Ligarde-Fimarcon is a hidden gem in the Gers I am afraid I can't say the same of our accommodation. We were very disappointed on arrival as the pictures on the Gites.com website are rather out of date. The pool shows a glistening blue water, but we found it is now black looking owing to a black liner. Not nearly as inviting.
The living area was crowded with furniture. In a Gite for 2 we had enough seating for 9 people making it feel cramped and oppressive. The bedroom on the other hand was lovely. Light, airy and spacious. Not something one could say about the kitchenette. In a cupboard under the stairs is a fridge, microwave and 2 ring stove top. Hardly any counter top for preparation and very limited in crockery and utensils. For washing up you had to use the bathroom. I'm afraid a trolley in the bathroom with a bowl and drainer does not suit me at all. Didn't feel at all hygienic. And that leads me to the bathroom......luckily I am able to get in and out of the bath quite adeptly but for others it may prove a struggle. To use the shower you need to stand in the bath which has a wide surround making it even more difficult to get in and out. And finally the outside space. Although there is a table and chairs outside the Gite there was no comfortable seating to relax in. And the area could have done with a good sweep and tidy. Our host Sallie was charming and discreet but that doesn't make up for our disappointment with her Gite and Gites.com. I don't think we will be booking with them again. I would also just like to add, that this is the third time I have tried to add this review, hopefully 3rd time lucky!!!

Dear Sue and Greg Philips, It was a great pleasure to have had you here, I will never forget the sight of you coming into the driveway in that beautiful old red classic convertible. Only sorry you had the bad luck to have been sandwiched inbetween the worst storms we've experienced here in years and hope your return was safe. In our many friendly conversations what I recall, was a handsome couple enjoying their holiday in the rustic tranquillity that the Gers offers - a shame we could not have discussed the issues you bring up during the time you were here rather than after the fact. I would have been more than glad to have accomodated you. Thank you for your constructive comments! i have updated the photo of the newly renovated black (!) pool which is our pride and joy - here's wishing you a good rest of the summer, Sallie

Restaurants, food & wine

We are fortunate to have a great choice of restaurants on all sides whether you look for a Michelin starred restaurant like the well-know Cordeliers in Condom where you can take your meal in the restored church sanctuary or the lovely terrace outside, or in Lectoure, Hotel du Bastard with its fine cuisine and 17th century decor, or the cosy beamed ambiance of Auberge du Bouviers in Lectoure on its side street. There are too many small personable cafés and restaurants to enumerate on the Rue National in Lectoure, La Romieu itself has two café restaurants each with its own charm. The Gers, Gascogne has a rich traditional cuisine featuring duck in all its glory, local melon in season, and there is a freshness and originality that is unforgettable. The wines from SW France are like the air here, full of presence and individualism. Within a few km of us, there are wine-tasting opportunites at the great winery at Domaine de Mirail between here and Lectoure, also great, Domaine de Gensac halfway between our house and Condom ( 10 km) . We will be glad to share our experience with you, in twenty years, we have our favorite restaurants, auberges and vineyards. We are also happy to help you with any bookings or reservations.

Activities

The chapel was a stopping place on the Chemin de St Jacques de Compostella, the pilgrim trail passes very close to our place on its way through Marsolan. I offer courses in Bread-making, and I am a conservatory graduate in piano - I can offer coaching if you have the time. Our place has no light pollution and is ideal for star-gazing, also it is protected from traffic and is very interesting to bird lovers. We have a standard size in-ground pool which is open day and night. We have a larger than usual (2 hectare) cultivated garden with fruit orchards with apple, quince, plum, cherries trees, olive grove of 13 mature trees, plus numerous black walnut and hazlnut trees. Because of the location in the midst of farmland, there are hares, deer, squirrels, who entertain us. We have a sauna on the premises, and a number of shaded terrace area for picnics.

  • Near hiking trails
  • Fishing
  • Other courses

Further remarks

We are classified as a "Gite Rurale" - if you stay here, you will feel that you are part of the life here, it is not the same as staying in a hotel. The farmers, the shop keepers are generous, friendly people. We have coffee out at the pool in the late morning and invite you to join us if you like, it is the only time we are there - the rest of the day (and night) it is your private pool. The fruit trees, nut trees, grape vines produce much too much for the two us and we are happy to share it with you! In cold weather, we supply central (gas) heat as part of the charge, if you would like firewood for the fireplace in the chapelle we will help you organize that for a moderate price. The great attraction of our home is for us the quiet and tranquillity, the closeness to nature.

Additional price info and offers

We do not request a damage deposit and request simply that you let us know if anything is damaged and we agree upon remuneration. If you would like to use the fireplace, we will organize firewood and kindling for you at the going price. We offer a gift basket the day of your arrival. I am available for bread-making sessions, for piano coaching also if you like. I charge €25 for each. We also make terry bathrobes available to help lighten your suitcase!

Price includes

Cleaning fee, Towels, Bed linen
